How the Blue Moonstone came about....
Sometimes it’s difficult to remember how and when an idea materialised.
The Blue Moonstone was an idea that seemed to just happen, but as I believe that where we are today, has come about by what we’ve done, who we’ve met along the way, and what we’ve been through, then maybe for me the pieces of the jigsaw have started to fall into place. |

I trained in hotel and catering management and unfortunately developed hand eczema within 5 years of starting work in the catering industry. I spent many years in and out of work. I saw doctors, consultants, dermatologists, anyone who might be able to give me back, hands that didn’t crack and bleed and hurt and look so unsightly. Some of the creams I was given were disgusting, both in texture and smell and it was far from a pleasure to use them and they did absolutely nothing for the condition. The hydrocortisone creams made very little difference apart from thinning my skin and making my hands susceptible to cuts with the slightest knock. In 2000, after a stressful few years as a single parent, I began a stress management course. My life was about to change dramatically!
The content of the course was very varied, aromatherapy, reflexology, Swedish massage, Indian head massage, tai chi, shiatsu, and nutrition. We learned that continual stress on the body causes dis-ease which eventually can bring about disease and in today’s world we are all very aware of how much time we spend “stressed out”.
During my first year of the course I was fortunate to be taught by nutritionist Margaret Moss of the Nutrition and Allergy Clinic in Stockport. On examining my hand eczema she announced that my liver was storing too much vitamin A, a fat soluble vitamin, and that the build up was poisoning my system. After three weeks of no carrots, tomatoes and brightly coloured vegetables, my eczema was almost gone. I now realised that during the summers when my hands would become so sore, that eating all those freshly grown tomatoes straight from the greenhouse was doing me more harm than good. This of course does not relate to every case of eczema, but I do believe that we all have a ‘weak spot’ whether it be the digestive system with irritable bowel, the head with migraines etc. I can now eat foods containing vitamin A, in moderation without ill effect. I have read many articles on how good vitamin A is for the skin but very few on the effects of overdosing!
I started making natural skin care products during my second year at college. I remember thinking that it was such a shame that I hadn’t had these creams during the twenty years of suffering with my skin. They moisturised the skin beautifully and the natural aroma could be tailored to suit. There was nothing to harm my skin, no lanolin, no by-products from the oil industry, no nasty preservatives. Apart from moisturising the face and hands, I had requests for foot balms and body butter. Clients would attend my clinic with different conditions and I’d mix a special cream or oil using the appropriate essential oils. And that is how The Blue Moonstone was born.
About us
The Blue Moonstone came from out of the blue! It started with a few pots of lavender moisturiser given to family and friends. They came back for more and I had also noticed a vast improvement in my skin too. I increased my production from 10 jars to 20 jars at a time. I had used a vegetarian supermarket called The Unicorn Grocery in Chorlton, Manchester, for some time and in 2002 I took a sample of my cream in with a business card. A few days later I was asked to call and speak to them. I was told that they loved the product and they ordered 300 jars of moisturising cream. I tried not to look too shocked and immediately went out and bought some larger cauldrons! I now supply a number of small shops in the area and The Unicorn order
100 jars every twelve weeks or so. We have progressed from moisturiser and now produce night cream, hand cream, foot balm, body butter and massage oil as well as healing creams. I listen to my clients and produce what they request wherever possible. At the moment I am working on sun blocks, tanning creams and lip balms. If you have any suggestions do not hesitate to
